EMT Scope of Practice

EMTs scope of practice includes but is not limited to…

  • Evaluate the ill or injured patient
  • Render basic life support, rescue and emergency medical care to patients
  • Obtain diagnostic signs to include, but not limited to, the assessment of temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration rates, level of consciousness and pupil status
  • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), including the use of mechanical adjuncts to basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Use the following adjunctive airway breathing aids:

o   Oropharyngeal airway

o   Nasopharyngeal airway

o   Suction devices

o   Basic oxygen delivery devices

o   Manual and mechanical ventilating devices designed for prehospital use

  • Use various types of stretchers and body immobilization devices
  • Provide initial prehospital emergency care of trauma patients
  • Administer oral glucose or sugar solutions
  • Extricate entrapped persons
  • Perform field triage
  • Transport patients
  • Set up for ALS procedures, under the direction of an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) or paramedic.
  • Perform automated external defibrillation when authorized by an AED service provider.
  • Assist patients with the administration of physician prescribed emergency medications and devices, including but not limited to:

o   Patient operated medication pumps

o   Sublingual nitroglycerin

o   Epinephrine devices

  • Slaline/heparin lock
  • Foley catheter
  • Tracheostomy tube
  • Ventricular assist device (VAD)
  • Surgical drains
  • Glucose solutions
  • Normal Saline
  • Ringer’s Lactate
  • Maintain Peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) lines
